Wow! The time has really gone by fast for this series of blocks. Welcome to all of you who are collecting these patterns and I hope you enjoy my Row as much as I did! Fall is my favorite time of year and all the beautiful colors that come with this Season.
For this year's Row, machine applique was my choice of sewing technique. I know lots of you know me for paper piecing so I thought I'd change it up a bit! This pattern is really, really easy.
Included with this pattern is a section for Basic Fusible Applique so don't worry if this is your first time doing machine applique. It's really pretty easy and lots of fun!
There are six blocks for the background. I used Northcott fabric Toscana #9020-10 Picket Fence (that's a cool color name) though you could easily substitute the Toscana #9020-12 Vanilla or mix the two together. There's lots of backgrounds today that are a variety of off whites or white on whites to add a little more interest to the background. For a lot of the shades of oranges and yellows, I had a layer cake (10" squares) from Northcott called Artisan Spirit, Sandscapes, Sunglow/Coral. Many thanks to Northcott for supplying the designers with fabrics and especially for donating all the fabrics for the giveaways. Since the largest applique shape is the center pumpkin, you can use any layer cake squares you might have left over from another project or simply dive into your stash since most of these shapes are small enough to use up those pesky scraps!
Here's a close up of the applique stitching around the apple and maple leaf. I stitched with Sulky 30wt Cotton Solids Red for the apple and Green for the little apple leaf. I stitched with Sulky 30wt Blendable #4006 for around some of the maple leaves and pumpkins. Blendables are a variegated coloring but, unlike variegated threads, the coloring varies throughout the thread without any order to it. Variegated threads tend to always have the exact colorations so that a pattern of color will sometimes appear and distract from the look of the applique stitching.
You can see the blendable color in this yellow/orange Maple leaf. It really stands out nicely and blends with the Fall colors of the entire Row. Experiment a little with thread colors and weights. Remember regular sewing thread is 50wt (weight). The threads I used were 30wt. The smaller the number the THICKER the thread, opposite of needle sizes!
This Row finishes 8" x 60". You can make your blocks taller like 10" finished if you want more fabric showing around the applique shapes. You could use less blocks if you wanted to make a shorter table runner for example. Take a block off the left and a block off the right and you will have a finished row of 8" x 40". Add a 3" finished borders all the way around and you'll have a Row that's 14" x 40" (or 60") There's lots of choices for you if you don't plan on making a Row quilt.

Thanks for the pattern. I think this would make a great table runner as well as a row in a quilt.

Thank you so much for a great fall row. That could easily go for a table runner, just as it is. I really like the center of it for that purpose.

Thanks Joan. I'm working on a border for mine now to make into a table runner! Be sure to send a picture along if you make yours into a table runner as well!

Thanks Susan. I have been thinking about taking just the center with the three pumpkins, leaves and some apples to make a pillow or a center for a wall hanging.
